A Pound of Cure: Solutions for Lost Teeth

What do you do if you have lost a tooth?  You have several options, read on to learn about them.

The best dental practice is preventive, to maintain your teeth in healthy condition for the duration of your life.  However, what do you do if your teeth have suffered as a result of poor dental care, or even an accident, and you have gaps where one or more teeth used to be.  Essentially, you have a number of options.

Do nothing

Of course, you have the option of doing nothing.  You can leave the gap in your teeth au naturale.  After all, many of the prospectors and rough pioneers who trekked their way across the American West were toothless old men.  But what if you're not in the Old West?  What if you're in Connecticut? Then you're apt to look a little strange, and your other teeth will drift, making them crooked.  In addition, the gap can trap food and become a haven for bacteria.  As your teeth drift, your bite will become misaligned, leading to secondary problems such as pain in your head, face, tooth, or jaw.

Dentures

This is a solution of which George Washington would approve.  Dentures are prosthetics that sit on your gums in the place of your teeth, and can be either full dentures or partials, depending on how many teeth you have lost.  Although dentures are a better solution than doing nothing, they still have several shortcomings.  Depending on how well they are designed, placed, and secured, they can also trap food particles and become harborages for bacteria.  In addition, poorly made dentures can be just as bad for your tooth/jaw alignment as leaving the blank spot.

Bridges

A dental bridge is composed of two parts, the pontic, or artificial tooth, and the anchor, which fastens the pontic to surrounding teeth.  Bridges can be made to replace one or more missing teeth.  Bridges come in three forms:

·         Traditional Bridges are bonded by means of crowns placed on neighboring teeth

·         Resin-bonded Bridges are bonded by means of resin to neighboring teeth, requiring less preparation than traditional bridges

·         Cantilever Bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the bridge

In all cases, the bridges function as if they were your natural teeth, providing bite support, chewing functionality, and, of course, cosmetic remedy of gaps.

Implants

Dental implants are the top-of-the-line solution to missing teeth.  An implant consists of two parts, the actual implant, which is screwed into or otherwise fastened to the jawbone, and the crown, which provides the chewing and cosmetic surface of the tooth.  The implant is generally made of titanium, a biocompatible material that is actually incorporated into the jawbone by your body.  The crown is made of a ceramic material like other dental crowns.
