Choosing a Family Resort

Author: Aldene Fredenburg

With all the PR out there about so many potential family resorts, use these handy tips to choose the one that's right for your family.

More and more resorts are recognizing that family-oriented accommodations and recreational activities are a big draw, and many advertise themselves as family-friendly. So with all the PR out there about so many resorts, how do you choose the one that's right for your family?

First look at the recreational possibilities of the area surrounding the resort. Does the region have its own natural beauty? Are there well-maintained hiking trails, bike paths, lakes or ponds with public access? Is there a summer theatre in the area, and if so, does it put on family-oriented productions? What about outdoor concerts?

At the resort itself, are there activities both for kids and their parents and for kids by themselves? Is there adequate child care and supervision of structured activities so that you feel comfortable leaving your kids in the hands of the resort staff? Are the activities something your kids would actually enjoy? Some children really love arts and crafts or drama classes, while others would prefer tennis or boating lessons. Is there a wide enough range of activities for each of your kids to enjoy, or is one of them going to end up bored?

Food is a big factor; ask the resort about their menu and their mealtimes. Make sure your kids like the food served at the resort, and that the mealtimes accommodate the kids' normal eating schedules.

Taking your own family interests and well-being into account and asking some basic questions of the resort's staff should quickly let you decide whether the resort meets your needs; finding a staff member wiling to answer all your questions in a straightforward, friendly manner is in itself a good sign. Once you've got the combination of great accommodations and activities and a great staff, you've got the makings of a great vacation. Have fun!
