Clothing Optional Caribbean Beaches

A number of beaches and resorts in the Caribbean offer clothing optional getaways. Learn more about your choices for beach-combing in the buff.

For some travelers, truly experiencing the Caribbean means letting nothing get between them and the gorgeous beaches that have garnered the region international acclaim. Sure, you can turn off your cell phone, but if you're looking to really become one with the white sugar sands and luxuriously warm waters, you might want to consider visiting one of the Caribbean's clothing optional or nude beaches.

First, a word of advice for those who may be unfamiliar with the vocabulary: Don't assume that "clothing optional" and "nude" are interchangeable. Sandy stretches noted for being "clothing optional" allow visitors to decide how much -- or how little -- they feel comfortable showing, making this sort of beach ideal for both the bold and the bashful alike. Nude beaches, on the other hand, are just that; here it is considered rude to remain dressed, as it can cause awkwardness all around.

There can be a bit of confusion when trying to determine the rules of a particular beach, but don't feel afraid to ask someone. If you're staying in a large resort, hotel staff will usually be more than happy to explain things and answer any questions. If you're on the lookout for a public beach, hit up the locals.

In the Caribbean, there are two ways to enjoy the breathtaking scenery au naturel. You can do a little independent searching and find a public beach that permits topless or nude sunbathing and swimming, or you can take advantage of the relaxed vibe found at many of the area's megaresorts.

If you prefer the quiet seclusion of a private getaway, French destinations St. Martin and Guadeloupe may be perfect for you. On St. Martin, clothing optional Orient Beach offers vacationers the chance to frolic topless, nude, or any point in between. Most of the fully-nude beachgoers tend to stay to the far right on this amazingly beautiful beach, while topless sunbathers can be found throughout. Plage Tarare in Guadeloupe represents another option. This small cove near Pointe-des-Châteaux is ideally suited, allowing travelers to soak up world-class Caribbean beauty in a clothing optional environment.

All-inclusive megaresorts offer yet another alternative, however, and are extremely popular with travelers who like to spend more time enjoying their travels than planning for them. By opting to stay at a resort with a private beach, you can take advantage of more relaxed rules.

In Jamaica, the Couples Ochos Rios and Hedonism III exemplify the two divergent spirit of these spots. The former is a sophisticated, adults-only resort that features a clothing optional private island available only for guests and accessible only by boat. But if you equate “sophisticated" with "stuffy," Hedonism III may be more to your liking. Here it's clear that "anything goes" - their laid-back, fun-loving attitude even extends to nude weddings!

If you'd prefer a more natural escape, check out the Eden Bay naturist resort in the Dominican Republic. Nudity is permitted everywhere on the grounds, even at the upscale restaurant located on-site. Unlike Jamaica, the Dominican Republic is not known for a party atmosphere, offering instead the opportunity to learn more about the island's native flora and fauna.

If you're looking to enjoy a relaxing vacation in a place that understands your dislike of tan lines, consider traveling to the Caribbean. From quiet beaches to bustling resorts, there are a number of great options awaiting visitors.
