Credit Card Guide for Poor Credit
Author: Jeannette Marcoaldi
If you have poor credit, but would like the convenience of having a Visa or MasterCard there are still options open to you. This simple guide will explain what cards are available even if you have bad credit.
The two types of cards that are available to those with poor credit are Secured and Prepaid.
A Secured Credit Card is just what the name implies. It's a card that has to be secured with your own money as collateral. If you are not able to meet any credit card payments this money is used to pay your debt. Typically it requires a minimum deposit of about $250 and maximums of up to $5000 on some cards. The credit limit on a Secured card will be lower than that of an Unsecured, Platinum or Gold card. A Secured credit card usually carries extra fees and charges. Therefore it is important to check annual, maintenance, participation, application and interest rate fees before applying. As it is difficult to travel or order online without a credit card, a secured card could be invaluable to anyone without good enough credit to qualify for an unsecured credit card.
A Prepaid Visa or MasterCard requires you to pre-pay the entire amount that can be drawn from the card. It is much like having an electronic bank account, where you can only draw on the amount in your account. A Prepaid Visa or MasterCard is not a credit card because no credit is being given to you in advance. Prepaid cards are good for those who have trouble repaying loans, but don't want to carry cash around for all their purchases. There will be no interest rate fees as you are only drawing on your own money not borrowing it. However, it is a good idea to check for application or transaction fees before signing up.
Whether you are applying for a Secured, or Prepaid Visa or MasterCard it is good to check all the Terms and Conditions before filling out an application. When applying online this information can usually be found on the home page of the credit card companies website through their "Terms and Conditions" link.
Having the freedom and benefits of a Visa or MasterCard need not be a problem for you if you have bad credit. Now that you know more about the two types of cards available for poor credit, you can better choose the one that best suits your needs.
