Custom Gaskets

Author: Ross Bainbridge

It is often times better to spend money on custom gaskets than on standard ones, especially if you have a unique type of seal tooling requirement. Custom gaskets do not only fir precisely – they also last longer. It is highly recommended to use custom gaskets instead of purchasing bulk footage because doing so can save you a lot of time and expense on installation.

There are two general types of custom gaskets: the custom mesh and the custom strip.

You need custom mesh gaskets if your applications require limited shielding and ‘environmental sealing,’ (or no sealing at all). You should graduate to custom strip gaskets if your applications require heavier shielding, pressure seal and environmental seal. These custom strip gaskets can be made with a central compression stop that can prevent damage to the gasket from too much compression. The same device also ensures proper shielding by allowing the correct closure pressure to be applied to the gasket.

Custom gaskets can be made out of special materials that are not usually used in standard gaskets. Depending on your specific tooling needs, you may ask the manufacturer to use polyvinyl, polyethylene neoprene, anti-bacterial and flame retardant materials, and even combinations of materials. You should also choose to use non-standard materials as necessary.

Remember that the kind of custom gasket material you use goes a long way – the wrong kind can ruin your equipment and products, and the right kind will greatly improve machine efficiency and save you both time and money in the long run.

Custom gaskets can be made as simple or as complex as necessary. Most custom gasket manufacturers can send you trained specialists to assess your requirements. Choose a custom gasket manufacturer that offers free consultation. They should be able to tell you what specific custom gasket type your machine or your product needs, taking into consideration your budgetary and time constraints.
