Dangers of Splenda Revealed

Author: Elena Mauceri

This money-making sweetener is very popular, but is it safe?

First, let me congratulate you. You're very smart to investigate whether there are any dangers of Splenda® before you ingest this artificial sweetener.

Is Splenda® bad for you? Splenda® contains chlorine, which is a proven carcinogen. Before sucralose was formally approved, research showed that it caused shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage) and enlarged liver and kidneys.

Research conducted since then documents numbness of male rats' hind legs, as well as negative effects on the livers, spleens and kidneys of laboratory animals.

Additional research has shown that artificial sweeteners, including sucralose, may actually stimulate appetite. That's a real blow to anyone trying to lose weight by using these sugar substitutes!

There has been no independent (i.e. without any tie to the manufacturer), long-term research on sucralose conducted on humans. So it's essentially an experimental product that somehow made it through the FDA approval process.

User Reports of the Danger of Splenda® According to my research, the following symptoms have been experienced within 24-hours of eating Splenda® products:

o The most common reaction that people have are skin problems such as redness, itching, swelling, or rash. o Breathing problems, such as wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath. o Allergic-type reactions such as facial swelling, as well as swelling of the tongue or throat, plus headaches and migraines. o Stuffy nose, runny nose, and sneezing. o Stomach problems such as bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea. o Heart problems such as palpitations or fluttering. o Joint pains and aches. o Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

Wow. Is this something that you would want to put into your body? Many people feel that there are dangers of Splenda®, and that they have been harmed by this sweetener.

While Splenda® may be safer than aspartame (Nutrasweet®, Equal®)--which is linked to leukemia and lymphoma--there still has not been enough convincing evidence to prove Splenda®'s safety.

I'll let you decide for yourself if you want to ingest this substance. There ARE better, natural alternatives that are low- or no-calorie and don't impact blood sugar. With all the other pollutants out there that we have little control over (like air pollution), let's minimize the toxins that we CAN control. Making a more natural sweetener choice is a good way to start.
