Deep Discounts On Groceries: How To Buy Some Foods For 50 Percent Off At Your Local Supermarket

Shoppers can often negotiate with grocery stores for lower prices on food that is about to expire. This article details the steps involved.
Everyone has seen bunches of ripe bananas for sale at fifty percent off. Imagine if you could buy other food at your local supermarket with that kind of discount. It's a well kept secret, but you often can. A variety of foods might be bought for next to nothing if you know what to do.
How is this possible? When food is about to expire, a store would rather sell it to you than throw it away. By law in many states, shops cannot sell groceries beyond the expiration date. Buying just before can be a really good deal since many foods last well beyond that time. Here are the steps involved.
- Notice the expiration dates on products you buy. When the date is within a couple of days, you may be able to strike a bargain with the store.
- A variety of products now have expiration dates stamped on them, such as milk, cheese, most dairy products, meat and bread. Prepared foods like sandwich spreads or ready made salads may have them also, as well as chips, crackers, cereal, cookies and snack foods. Fruits and vegetables may not have actual dates, but it should be clear when they are becoming too ripe.
- A number of these foods are good for days well past the expiration date such as dairy products. Many items can be put in the freezer to last even longer. For example, milk and cheese can be frozen. Meat can be cooked and then frozen. Ripe bananas are excellent for making banana bread which can keep a long time.
- Locate the manager of the department that sells the product that's about to expire. Inform him or her that an item is close to its expiration date. Negotiate with the manager and then agree to a discounted price. Typically the manager will then mark the item with the new lower price using a broad black indelible marker. Make sure you call attention to this changed price when you check out, so that it is not run through the scanner at the old cost. This style of negotiating may vary from store to store and in different regions of the country.
- Businesses operate on the principle of supply and demand. So, for example, if dozens of bottles of milk are about to expire in a day or so, the manager may bargain with you. However, if only a couple are going to expire, you might be out of luck.
- More and more products now have expiration dates. Look for these on everything you buy.
- Near the end of the day, you may be able to get discounts on fresh baked bread, donuts and other items in the deli section.
- Other businesses besides supermarkets may bargain with you. For example, a fast food restaurant sold me a bucket of fried chicken for almost nothing just minutes before closing time.
