Dental patients who have lost their teeth frequently turn to bridgework and dentures for permanent replacement of their missing teeth. There are drawbacks to both of these options. Bridgework can damage healthy teeth, and dentures can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and may cause bone loss. There is a better solution.

Dental implant surgery is a permanent solution to permanent teeth loss. An implant is an artificial prosthetic that is drilled into the jawbone and has a 90 to 95% success rate. Dental implants are more durable and stronger than bridges or dentures and provide maximum effectiveness for other restorative procedures such as crowns. The implants serve as roots for the missing teeth are fused to the bone and will not slip, make any noise or cause bone damage.

Cause of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss occurs for a variety of reasons:

·         Trauma caused by an accident or fight

·         Root canal failure

·         Gum disease

·         Extreme tooth decay

·         Excessive wear and tear

Some people who have lost their teeth become self-conscious and won’t smile. Tooth loss can also lead to a change in eating habits, which could result in malnutrition. Dental implants may be right for you under the following conditions:

·         One or more missing teeth

·         You are unable or unwilling to wear dentures

·         Your jawbone has reached full growth

·         Your oral tissues are healthy

·         You have adequate bones to secure the implants with no health challenges that will effect bone healing

·         You are able to commit several months for the complete process

·         The Procedure

The entire dental implant procedure can take 3 to 6 months to complete depending on whether or not bone grafting is required. A skilled dentist bores a small–diameter pilot hole into the jawbone then slowly widens it to allow room for the implant. A titanium screw is implanted into the hole with a protective cover to aid in the healing process. The protective cover remains in place for months and is replaced with a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready. Once the permanent crown arrives from the lab, the dentist removes the temporary and bonds the new crown to the implant fitting it perfectly within the patient’s other teeth.
