Depression can affect a teenager’s thoughts, feelings, behavior and overall health. When depression goes untreated, it can get worse and becomes harder to treat. It’s important to seek help if you think your teen is suffering from depression.

Treatments for teens with depression include counseling and sometimes medication. Counseling helps to talk through feelings with a trained professional who can help identify the causes and recommend treatment for depression.
Antidepressants may be recommended as a type of medication. Antidepressants are given in more severe forms of depression when the patient can’t focus on anything and are overwhelmed. With treatment, most depressed people start to feel better in just a few weeks.
