Doing Well in Life
Author: Rick Seward
The amount of education and money that one accumulates in life does not necessarily mean that one has been successful. The key to life's success lies elsewhere.
During the spring of the year, the country see hundreds of thousands of young men and women graduate from high school and a like number from college. To be sure, these are milestones in a persons life. Speakers at the various commencement ceremonies inform young people that this is only the beginning of lifes' travels and to succeed, they must work hard. Leading up to this moment, parents and teachers have constantly drilled into their young people the importance of getting a good education to succeed in life. If they do that, they are assured of often a high income and the accumulation of lots of money in life. Then, they are told they will have achieved success in their life.
To be sure, a good education that gives one a marketable skill is very important but I contend that it alone is not what makes a person successful on the road of life. Further, I contend that accumulating vast wealth does not equate to a successful life if that wealth is used for the wrong purposes. Instead, I believe the secret of a successful life is found elsewhere.
I have known many people in my life that had very little formal education and really had not accumulated too many material goods and yet they were happy and content. Additionally, they thought well of by their peers and the community in general. If you talked to these people, they were agreeable, oftentimes cheerful and always seemed to be willing to smile. Always with a friendly attitude. If problems or controversy arose in their life, they were quick to look for common ground and work to compromise a situation and thereby maintain tranquility and yet see to it that the task was completed.
With these observations, I have long come to realize that the key to a successful person in life does not equate to the amount of education that one has nor does it amount to how much money one has, rather the key to success in life is determined by how well one gets along with other people.
As we go through life, we come into contact with all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds and stations in life. It is a good honest character coupled with an even minded temperament and a willingness to smile and be sincere in dealing with others that will go farthest in this world.
We all can look around us and think of people that we would rather deal with or be in proximity to and frankly it is not always the wealthy or the highest educated person that comes to mind. Rather it is often the person that is friendly, agreeable and honest and fair minded that we choose to spend our time with.
To summarize my feelings on the key to success in life, I believe that all of the education and money that one accumulates throughout one life, does not necessarily mean that that person is successful. Rather, I believe the truly successful person is the one who can get along well with other people.
