Father Points Up Importance Of The Dad-Daughter Bond

Author: Patty Toney

Fathers really matter to daughters, and daughters really matter to fathers.

Joe Kelly has gone from being a dad working out of his home to a national known spokesman for fatherhood.

He now offers a book, Dads and Daughters: How to Inspire, Understand, and Support Your Daughter When She's Growing Up So Fast (Broadway).

His message is simple: Fathers really matter to daughters, and daughters really matter to fathers.

"A father has the power to set the norms for his daughter on what to expect from a life partner," says Kelly, the father of twin daughters.

How a father acts toward his daughter and other women is what she will expect later from boys and men, says the former journalist and domestic violence counselor.

"That's why its so important for a father to be respectful of all women. His daughter will say, 'That's the kind of guy I will look for.'" And a son will know how to treat women and girls and what qualities to look for in a future girlfriend or wife.

Kelly defines the landscape for fathers and daughters in the treacherous domain of child-rearing today. He has been interviewed on many television programs and has been interviewed in magazines and newspapers.

If you are raising a daughter, listen to each other, especially during the teen years. The good news is that you can steer her in the right direction.
