In Praise of Paris Hilton - the Next Oprah?

Author: Ugur Akinci

The minute she discovers that real personal and commercial growth lies beyond staying as the center of her own universe and requires opening up and shooting like a comet into the orbits of other but more mundane lives, Paris Hilton might become the next Oprah, in a different sense.

Oh my God she is everywhere… On every TV channel, in every magazine, on the Internet, in bookstores, in shopping malls, I even believe I saw her face the other day on the side of a bus, if I’m not wrong…

Paris Hilton…

A phenomenon, a case of marketing magic that should be thought and discussed in all business and marketing schools across the land.

What an interesting thing when 1) you know you’ve seen the face of a blonde woman on the side of a public bus while driving at 60 miles an hour, 2) you’re not sure whose face that might be, but 3) you still have a feeling that it might have been none other than Paris Hilton!

That’s marketing, friends. That's positioning and branding par excellence.

You do not have to be young or old, cool or clueless, rich or poor to appreciate the new American Icon that Paris Hilton turned herself into by sheer determination and that carefully maintained shy-blonde-next-door persona.

She is just shopping, doing nothing else… and we are watching her (some of us all day long, actually).

She is arguing with her sister… and we are reading all the details the next day.

She is breaking up with her boyfriend… well, I’m sure thousands are feeling heartbroken as well.

We are living vicariously through Paris while most of us keep thinking she is yet another rich and spoiled celebrity, and this one born with a silver spoon in her mouth, and thus nothing special to notice or acknowledge, perhaps yet another flavor-of-the-day pop article that will blow away.

But I have a feeling Paris Hilton might turn out to be more than that.

The girl that once made the waves for starring in the kind of low-budget flicks that you wouldn’t show to your children is now slowly insinuating her way into our homes and streets and into what we read and watch and hear.

This is nothing short of a "cultural invasion" on a scale matched and superseded perhaps only by the other True American Popular Culture Icon of our time – the one and only Oprah!

On that note I’m still wondering if Paris and her agent and managers will have the sagacity to reposition her career to turn her into the “friend of the masses” figure that Oprah is.

Somehow we feel that Oprah is “one of us” even if she makes a hundred million dollars a year. That’s her great accomplishment and legacy that cannot be taken away.

So far Paris Hilton is still “the other.”

There is still this distance between us and this slightly-aloof and vulnerable if good-hearted and happy blonde girl that seems to be more absorbed with her own trials and tribulations than our own.

The minute she discovers that real personal and commercial growth lies beyond staying as the center of her own universe and requires opening up and shooting like a comet into the orbits of other but more mundane lives, Paris Hilton might become the next Oprah, in a different sense.

I’m not putting that possibility beyond the usually underestimated smarts of Paris Hilton. She is a true professional a lot sharper than most people give her credit for. That’s why I think she’ll continue to be in our lives, in our living rooms, in our bookstores and our TV sets and podcasts for a long long time to come.

Who knows, she might one day even end up healing us with her own personal example as well, not only for what she does but simply for being who she is, like Oprah does (and is) on a daily basis. And that’s a promise worth waiting for. --------------------------------------------------
