If you are seeking a better career, perhaps it’s time to go back to school. Schools, colleges, and universities are institutions of higher learning that provide studies in practical subjects, practices, theories, and research in a variety of subjects. Schools can be post-secondary institutions that provide vocational, trade, and technical courses of study for practical employment. These schools provide diplomas, certificates, and two-year associate degrees in many fields of study.
Colleges are generally four-year institutions that confer certificates, two-year associate degrees, and four-year bachelor degrees. Colleges can also be graduate institutions that provide advanced studies for master degrees, and sometimes doctorate degrees.
Universities most often provide undergraduate as well as graduate studies and degrees. Associate and bachelor degrees, as well as master degrees and doctorate degrees can be earned by students who satisfactorily complete programs of study in universities. Post-graduate certificates in advanced studies in various disciplines that advance graduate occupations are also granted by universities.
All schools provide classes, courses of study, laboratory experience, knowledge and backgrounds necessary for successful employment and occupation in many fields. Their purpose is the provision of intellectual development that allows people to obtain knowledge and experience that broadens perspectives and prepares for careers of all kinds.
Schools frequently assist in placing students in cooperative programs that advance knowledge through nurturing on-the-job short-term internships. In this environment, students are able to learn the intricacies and applications in their field. This also serves to make contacts leading to positions after graduation.
Schools may government by education boards or boards of governors. University and college boards of governors are made up of trustees, presidents, vice presidents, and deans that serve divisions, departments or "schools," as in "School of Business," or "School of Psychology." These governing bodies review all aspects of institutional functions, including budgets, programs of instruction, rules of employment, plans for growth and development, etc.
