The Need for Advertising

There seems to be a trend among a lot of smaller business owners that they don’t really need to advertise. After all, the job they do is good, and word of mouth will be able to do all the advertising they need for free.

There seems to be a trend among a lot of smaller business owners that they don’t really need to advertise. After all, the job they do is good, and word of mouth will be able to do all the advertising they need for free. When it comes to a freelancer of any kind this becomes even more prominent of a mentality. The notion that advertising is only for larger companies is often the reasoning behind this lack of advertising. A lone, self employed freelancer doesn’t need to bother with something like that. There are all different kinds of advertising out there. Sure, if you work by yourself, you probably don’t need to come up with catalogs about your services or send out a newsletter about your current activity. Some styles of advertising really do apply more to certain types of companies, but that doesn’t mean that all forms of advertising don’t apply to you. A very pertinent style of advertising to the freelance worker or small business owner is the use of full color business cards. A great business card can be just as effective as a brochure or flyer when it comes to marketing yourself. Doing a wonderful job and using testimonials to spread the word about you is all well and good, but that’s only true if people are able to easily remember all the details about you. When you do a job for someone why not give him or her a business card to help remember you and how to contact you. When the time comes for them to tell a friend about you, now they’ll have that full color business card to hand out. This is a much better strategy than just relying on the person to remember everything about you. Advertising also comes in the form of how you present yourself. Beyond just the job you do, printing greeting cards to have ready when people first walk into your office is a good way of creating a nice feel for the business. This isn’t a huge step, but it also can greatly change a person’s perception of you and the company you run. Quite often it’s the little things that can make a difference when it comes to marketing yourself. Printing greeting cards improve the image people have of you just as business cards can help spread the word to others. At the very least, it’s handy to have a business card ready to hand to a person who might have interest in you. Just because these techniques aren’t vast, expensive advertising ventures, that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing a good job of advertising you. A small business doesn’t forgo advertising altogether; it just uses it in a smaller scope. Don’t pigeonhole advertising, and in doing so, fail to use the methods that work best for your situation.
