Traveling in Mexico: Getting Around OrizabaWell you have feet, don’t you? Getting around the city of Orizaba couldn’t be easier. Taxis are readily available and very cheap, fares are only a few pesos from anywhere to anywhere in town. The cheapest way to get around of course, is to walk. The compact size of the mountain climbing-based city allows you to stroll casually between many locations in a matter of minutes, especially in and around downtown.
Traveling in Mexico: The City of OrizabaOrizaba is a city of about 100,000 Indians and mixed Spanish blood inhabitants is named for Mt. Orizaba (Citlaltepetl), Mexico’s highest peak and the third highest peak in North America at an elevation of about 18,406 ft. (5,610 meters). Only Mt. McKinley in Alaska and Mt. Logan in Canada are higher. Also referred to as Pico de Orizaba, it can have snow at its upper levels year-round but the mountain climbing season is in Winter, which is just the opposite of the other North American climbs. That makes Orizaba a very popular destination from November through February. The climbers (and tourists) come principally from all over North America with some from Europe and beyond. They almost all speak English, so the English teaching trade is booming. Local schools and businesses want and need your services!
Traveling in Mexico: Paracutin is BornHis ox stopped again, panting from the effort of pulling a crude wooden plow through soil that cracked beneath each labored step. Dionisio stopped too, mopping his brow for the hundredth time. "Tst – tst!," the Tarascan Indian coaxed at the beast. It clambered up and again began the grueling toil. They had been laboring since before the yellow burning ball had began to launch its missiles against man and beast in the oft-parched lands that lay well east of the Pacific’s rocky shores. "Run!" screamed the terrified farmer to the campesinos nearby.
Traveling in Mexico: Life in Acapulco"Here’s an Agua de Pipa with ice," I offered."Just what I need. I’m parched," she quickly responded as I held out the dark brown ball that was a chilled, wet coconut.A hole had been sliced into its top to admit a long yellow straw. She sipped for a few seconds that seemed like an eternity to her salt-cracked throat, the sweetness contrasting the Pacific’s salt. Whirling abruptly, she dropped into the blue wooden lounge chair next to me, throwing a cartoon character towel across her dripping torso. Her feet buried themselves in the moist, warm sand. Shade from the blue and white canvas beach umbrella blocked the late morning Acapulco sun. Raggedly clad vendors plodded their way along the beach hawking chili-powder-sprinkled mangoes, cheese-filled roast platano slathered with sweet cream, and clear plastic bags of brightly-colored soft drinks. Straws protruded from their twist-tied tops. Then, they made me an offer I didn’t refuse.
Traveling in Mexico: What to Do in AcapulcoLiving in Acapulco: "See you on the beach after English class!" Living in Acapulco, this is an all-too-common phrase of sorts. But after the beach, there’s far more to do and see. Here are some snippets from life in Acapulco.
Traveling in Mexico: Welcome to CuautlaArriving at the glass-walled ADO terminal, I exited the building to the greeting of horns blaring, the stench of choking exhaust fumes, and the shrill bleating of a policeman’s whistle as he tried futilely to evoke order from this chaos of gridlock. It seemed like all 300, 000 residents were headed down this street at the same time. Welcome to Cuautla. The name means something like "next to the eagles" in the indigenous tongue of the Indians in this area. Inching my way across two lanes of stalled traffic to the other side of the street, I turned right, heading south on Calle 2 de Mayo. Three and a half blocks later I turned into the tranquil, fern-lined courtyard of the Hotel España and booked a room on the second floor. Tossing my bags on one of the two double beds, I sprawled across the other for a moment’s breather. I’d been through Cuautla’s worst already, "From here on it could only get better," I thought. I was right. They did get better – much, much better.
