Visiting Argentina during the low season

Author: Drazen Prastalo

Argentina is for many travelers one of the most beautiful country in South America, with their waterfalls, subtropical forest, beautiful vineyards and friendly people that make you fell like you are home. Learn how to find beautiful places, the best attractions and find out what is the cheapest time of the year for traveling to Argentina.

One of the most beautiful countries in South America is absolutely Argentina. Placed near the Andes, between Chile and Brazil, Argentina has the perfect position. The weather is warm in the north and cold in the south which gives you a lot of options for your vacation to choose. You can go hiking, skiing, you can look at whales or you can just rest on their beautiful beaches. The choice is completely yours, but remember, you can’t go wrong what ever you decide to choose.

Before you buy a plane ticket you have to do a little research and decide what part of Argentina you wish to visit and what is your vacation going to look like.

For example, first decide do you want to spend your vacation close to the sea, or maybe in mountains or even in country side. Than, choose a town, and so on.

The weather

Most people, when traveling, are worried about the weather. If the weather is bad there is no point of traveling there, right? It’s hard to talk about weather in Argentina generally, because it is covering more than 1 million square miles continental surface area. But, I will at least tell you what kind of weather you can expect on different seasons.

Argentina is placed on Southern Hemisphere so the seasons are reversed (for example, if you are from USA, your winter is summer in Argentina). The weather varies from north to south and from west to east and the closer to the Andes, ranging from subtropical in the north to humid and steamy in the centre, and cold in the temperate south. The Andes region has erratic rainfall, flash floods in summer, searing heat, snow at higher elevations, and the Zonda - a hot, dry wind. The lowlands receive sufficient rainfall to support swampy forests and upland savanna, but rainfall decreases from east to west; shallow summer flooding is common in the east.

Most of Argentina is visited year-round - the exception is the far south (Ushusaia and El Calafate-Lago Argentino) which have extreme winters and are not only unpleasant but many attractions are closed or not accessible and due to a drop in visitors, hotels at minimum staff or closed.

The winter dry season is pronounced, and the summer heat can be brutal. Patagonia is mild year-round in the east and glacial in the south. Weather in Patagonia can be very unpredictable, and can change drastically and unexpectedly.

Long story short – the summer last from December to March and that is the warmest time of the year. It can even very hot and humid, so maybe it’s not the most pleasant time of the year. The best time to go is on March and April or on September, October and November. If you like skiing on the south than the best time to go is winter, on June and July.

Crowded times…

Everyone would like to avoid the crowds but the problem is that most of us go on vacation during holidays when everyone else is also on vacation. So, avoiding crowds is a tough job. But if you can, avoid public holidays (Christmas, Easter, New Year) and spring break. Those are really the busiest times, especially in Argentina.

Attractions in Argentina

There are many attractions in Argentina, some of them you can see during the whole year, and some of them are available only during some seasons. Here’s an example:

Summer (Jan-Feb) Patagonia - trekking, horse riding, sightseeing in general, fishing Andes - trekking, alpinism, horse riding

Autumn (Apr-May)  Northwest - trekking, horse riding Northeast - visiting Iguassu Falls

Winter (Jun-Aug) North Patagonia/Mendoza – skiing

Spring (Sep-Nov) Buenos Aires - the most beautiful season, especially in November with the jacarandas in blossom

Saving money in Argentina

You can save money by not visiting Argentina during the high season, in months like December and January, or in months like July and August. You should also avoid coming there during the holiday cause the prices are up. For a cheap vacation I recommend coming during the low season, in months like September, April and June. You don’t need to worry about the weather because it’s nice most time of the year.

Final words

Ok, you know the important things. Now just fix the rest, like your accommodation and transport and you’re done.

I wish you a nice and safe trip to Argentina, and a pleasant time staying there.
