There are four basic types of mattress. The traditional spring coil or inner spring mattress. This is the most common type of mattress. Steel coils which have been heat tempered are used to provide the support. The coils can be laid out in a number of ways, people presume the more springs there are, the better. This isn’t always the case. Other factors to consider are the spring size and the spring firmness. The springs are surrounded by padding to provide comfort, this is also an essential part of the build to consider.
The foam mattress is particularly popular with people with back conditions as the properties of the foam means it moulds to the users body much more precisely than an inner spring mattress. This means support is much more even, so there are no pressure points on the back or shoulders. When laid upon the foam becomes warmer from the body heat which allows it begin moulding to the body. This also means you may need thinner blankets as the mattress holds in more warmth.
Finally you have the not so popular air and water beds. Air beds tend to be purchased for occasional use, such as when you go on vacation or have guests, as they are easily deflated and stored. However, you can get higher grade air mattresses for a permanent use bed. Water mattresses have similar properties to air mattress, they are both ideal for getting the exact level of firmness you desire by slowly adding or removing more water or air – ideal for fussy sleepers.
