White Sun (Cause and Effect)

Author: Teow Aun Chew

Cause is like a seed and effect is like the fruit resulting from the growth of the seed. In order for the seed to germinate and grow, it requires the proper conditions such as water, soil, sun, air and human effort, which we called "affinity" or "condition." Cause and affinity are the two main criteria which bring a resulting effect.

During the Han Dynasty in China, there was a man by the name of Yuan Lung. He had caused the death of another man by the name of Tsao Tsuoh and this is a true story recorded in history book of how Yuan Lung caused the death of Tsao Tsuoh. After ten lives time, they met again strangely in different forms and the story goes this way to confirm the truth of cause and effect:

“During the Tang Dynasty, there was a monk name Oudda. He followed the teachings diligently and had great virtue and knowledge. One day, he met another monk who was very sick, lying on the street where his body was full of ulcers, infection and unpleasant odor. No one bothered him but Oudda brought him back to his temple and personally took care of him for several months until he was cured. Before he left, he told Oudda, ‘When you encounter difficulty and are in need of help, you can go to a mountain named Chiu Lung in Szu Chuan Province. Look for me where there are two tall old pine trees.’

After some time, because of Oudda’s great virtue and knowledge, he was chosen by the emperor as the teacher of the nation, in charge of all the monks in the country. The emperor treated him very well and Oudda became very proud.

After a while, out of a sudden, a boil appeared on Oudda’s knee. This boil is very mystical and strange because it had a human face with eyes, nose and mouth. It could speak and when it was hungry, it would ask for meat. If the request was not met, it would cause Oudda great pain. When the emperor saw the situation, he sent for all the best doctors to come and see Oudda, but to no avail. Oudda realized that this boil was the cause of bad karma (cause and effect) but he did not know the actual reason.

Finally, he remembered what the monk who he had saved earlier had told him. He decided to look for him and searched for the two tall old pine trees in Szu Chuan at mountain Chiu Lung. When he saw the trees, he had great hope that he might have a chance to be saved. He saw a huge temple and the monk was already there waiting for him. They were very happy to meet each other again and Oudda asked the monk why there was a boil with a human face growing from his knee and whether he could help to cure it. The monk said: ‘Don’t worry. There is a spring in this mountain. Later I will ask someone to take you there to wash your knee, and it will be cured.’

When Oudda went to the spring and was preparing to wash his knee, the human boil started to speak:

‘Wait a minute, do you know who I am?’

Oudda was very angry and said:

‘I don’t care who you are. Why do you keep disturbing and cause me to suffer?’

The human boil said:

‘You are Yuan Lung during the Han Dynasty, and I am the great general called Tsao Tsuoh. I was beheaded by the emperor because of you.’

Oudda said:

‘I have read it in history book and I remembered the event of how Yuan Lung caused the death of Tsao Tsuoh. But how would I know how much pain you felt at that moment?’

The human boil said:

‘I have never forgotten the pain and anger I suffered. You advised the emperor to put me to death. I have been following you through your ten reincarnations, but you have been monk for ten lives and diligently obeying the disciplinary rules, so I did not have any opportunity to take revenge. Now you have become proud and you have been living in luxury, with desire to be well known. Therefore I have the chance to come into your knee. Originally, I was going to let you suffer until you die, just like the pain I suffered when I was beheaded. But this time, if not for the respect of the Honorable Chia Nau Chia who came to negotiate for you, I wouldn’t let this matter be resolved. Today, after I am washed with this divine spring water, I will no longer hurt you.’

Oudda then raised the water with his hand and washed his knee. The pain he felt caused him to faint several times, but the human boil finally disappeared. When he looked around, the temple and the monk had also disappeared.”

Life after life, through the cycle of reincarnation, we see strange happenings all around the world. Israel surrounded by Arab countries. Not able to live in peace like Oudda and the human boil until one party forgives another one. China and Taiwan, North and South Korea, India and Pakistan, Christian and Muslim, the coming of the tenth Iman in Iran and the second coming of Christ, all these will never stop until we stop and forgive each other.
