The 46th Olympiad will follow the familiar Swiss system format with 11 rounds, taking place from September 1 to September 14, 2026. Six consecutive rounds in the early days will test the endurance of all teams before a single rest day after Round 6. The final round is scheduled to start at 11 am instead of the usual 3 pm, a practical adjustment for the closing ceremony that creates an interesting psychological variable. India enters as defending champion in both sections with a formidable lineup. In the Open section, world champion Gukesh D., along with Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa – who recently dethroned Erigaisi as India No. 1 – plus Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi, gives India three players rated above 2700. The Women's team features Humpy Koneru, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal, and Savitha Shri.
